5 Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Your Face

To keep your skin healthy and balanced, it’s important to avoid these five common face-washing mistakes:
Avoid using hot water. Hot or steamy water can strip away your skin’s natural protective oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and a weakened skin barrier. Opt for lukewarm water instead to cleanse gently without causing damage.
Be gentle—don’t scrub aggressively. Harsh scrubbing with rough towels, washcloths, or abrasive brushes can create micro-abrasions, redness, and irritation. Cleanse using soft, circular motions with your fingertips, and gently pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel.
Choose the right cleanser for your skin type. Cleansers that are too harsh—such as bar soaps, body washes, or products containing sulfates—can disrupt your skin’s natural balance. Likewise, using a formula unsuited to your skin type (dry, oily, sensitive, or combination) may be ineffective. For sensitive skin, fragrance-free and gentle cleansers are generally recommended.
Wash your hands before touching your face. Throughout the day, your hands collect dirt, oil, and bacteria. Cleansing them first helps prevent transferring impurities onto freshly washed skin.
Don’t skip moisturizing. While cleansing removes dirt and excess oil, it can also remove moisture. Applying a moisturizer to slightly damp skin immediately after washing helps seal in hydration and supports a healthy skin barrier.
